1Executive summary

Entry-level hiring in India is growing, but most candidates walk in unprepared and nobody tells them why they were rejected. HireMate runs the real interview for four high-volume roles: Data Analyst, Credit Analyst, Field Sales / Relationship Executive and Collections Officer. It does this in English or Hindi, then scores the answer against others going for the same role and lists what to fix.

Candidates pay small amounts, starting with a free first mock and ₹99 per mock after that. Colleges and training institutes buy seats for their students. Once the pool is big enough, NBFCs pay a success fee, but only after a hire has stayed 30 days. The plan reaches 10,000 users in 6 months through colleges, WhatsApp job groups and a shareable score card.

The attrition figure matters most for the business. Someone who joins as a collections officer today is likely job-hunting again within a year, so the same user comes back for every switch.

Our survey says the real competitor is ChatGPT, not Apna. That's what respondents already use to prepare. So the pitch isn't "AI mock interviews". It's the things ChatGPT doesn't do: a voice role-play that pushes back, a score against other candidates, and questions taken from how NBFCs actually interview.
ChatGPT tells you answers. HireMate argues back.

3Pricing strategy

Model: freemium plus small one-time payments, a time-boxed pass instead of a monthly subscription, and seats sold to colleges and institutes. Job searching happens in bursts: people prepare hard for a few weeks and then stop. A pass that ends after 90 days fits that pattern, and it never auto-renews on someone who has already got a job.

Job-Ready Pass ★

₹599
  • Unlimited mocks for 90 days (fair use: 30)
  • Resume review + growth plan
  • Shareable score card

Add-on: ₹10 AI resume review, a deliberately tiny first UPI payment to build the habit. Institutions: colleges and training institutes buy Job-Ready Passes in bulk for their students (price per seat negotiated, target ₹300–400).

Changed after the survey Assumed
When asked how they'd prefer to pay, 8 of 14 survey respondents chose "monthly unlimited" and none chose the 10-mock pack. So the ₹599 tier became unlimited for 90 days, and the ₹499 pack was dropped: no survey respondent and no persona chose it.
Open conflict: all 5 synthetic candidate personas rejected monthly plans and preferred ₹99–₹200 once, before a specific interview. The real survey was small and mostly my own network. Launch with both the ₹99 single and the ₹599 pass, and let real purchases decide.

Employer side (from month 6)

ModelPriceWhy
NBFCs: success fee per hire, paid by the employer20% of the hire's first-month salary (≈ ₹3,600 on ₹18k), due after the hire has stayed 30 daysAgencies charge ~8.33% of annual CTC, roughly a full month's salary. HireMate costs about a fifth of that, and only for people who stay. Sold to regional HR, since branch managers can't approve spend.
Banks: assessment tool (later)Pilot, then per assessmentBanks won't pay for "screened candidates", but may pilot role-specific assessments through procurement, after an information-security review and with candidate consent.
Employer view of a candidate—A 30-second audio clip of the role-play, the red-line result and the reasoning, never just a score. Shared only with the candidate's consent.
Candidates never pay a share of their salary. In our survey, 6 of 14 had been asked to pay money to get a job, and one had actually paid. The draft Private Placement Agency Bill 2025 Verified targets exactly these fees. No job guarantees, and no placement fees charged to candidates, ever.

5MVP strategy and problem validation

What we did

Market research from four AI tools, cross-checked, with every number used here verified at the original source (6 errors caught and removed). This was followed by a self-hosted survey with a screener (19–30 Sep), then 14 synthetic persona interviews: 7 personas (5 candidates, 2 hiring managers), each run separately in ChatGPT and Gemini, answering the same interview guide. Real interviews didn't happen in time; that is the main gap, and the next step.

26survey starts

Survey data is directional, not proof. n = 14, and more than half came from my own network (PMs and engineers), which I report separately. The interviews carry the real weight.

Grounded in how banks and NBFCs actually hire

The question bank (48 scenarios, 12 per role) was built from ChatGPT and Gemini research, then checked at the primary source. These facts shape the MVP:

7 AI errors caught and fixed in this round, on top of the 6 in the market research. Examples: Gemini called a weekend RTGS credit a sign of forgery (RTGS has run 24×7 since Dec 2020), and 4 of its "model answers" would break fair-practice rules (fake urgency, compulsory insurance, threat-like escalation, social-media tracing). An interview coach that teaches rule-breaking answers is a liability, so every scenario is checked before it ships.

Hypotheses scorecard

#HypothesisSignal so farStatus
H1Candidates don't get realistic practice with feedbackSurvey: ChatGPT and YouTube are the main tools, nobody paid for coaching. Personas: all 5 have material, none has practice that pushes backSupported
H2Rejected candidates are rarely told whySurvey: weak. Personas: one-line reasons at best; both hiring personas admit they don't explainMixed
H3Failure points differ by rolePersonas: collections = pressure, sales = own numbers, credit = case files, data = BFSI terms, switchers = office EnglishSupported Synthetic
H4Field roles prefer practising in Hindi / regional languagesTrue for field roles (and the NBFC manager wants to hear the Kannada role-play); others want help sounding professional in EnglishChanged
H5Micro-pricing fitsSurvey: "monthly unlimited". Personas: monthly 0 of 5; ₹99–200 once 3 of 5; "college, institute or employer should pay" 5 of 5Split
H6Candidates distrust paying anyone "to get a job"6 of 14 were asked to pay for a job; 1 actually paidSupported
H7Employers would pay for a screened poolNBFC manager: maybe, per hire, only after 30 days; a score alone is "meaningless". Bank HR: won't pay for candidates; might pilot an assessment toolSplit Synthetic

What that changes: the lead message is role-play depth and honest feedback, the gap ChatGPT leaves ("it always agrees with me"). Hindi and Kannada stay for field roles. Candidates are a weak payer on their own, so colleges, institutes and NBFCs carry the revenue.

How far to trust the persona interviews: they are AI-simulated, not real users. Lines that praise the idea are ignored, because they echo the prompt. The objections (no monthly plans, "don't shout at me more", "a score means nothing", data privacy) are kept, because the AIs produced them against the grain. Gemini invented 4 numbers despite instructions, and none are used. All 14 transcripts and the scoring rules are kept in the research folder.

MVP features

FeatureIn MVPWhy it's needed to test product-market fit
Voice mock interview, 4 rolesYesThe core value. Real interviews are spoken, and field roles are judged on how you talk.
Role-play scenarios (collections call, sales objection, credit case)YesThe difference from ChatGPT and Apna. If users don't value these, the positioning is wrong.
Push-back follow-ups (e.g. job-loss customer → "I'll complain to RBI")YesBeing challenged is what ChatGPT and YouTube don't give. It's also what candidates freeze on in real interviews.
Red-line check (RBI recovery rules, mis-selling, kickbacks)YesA rule-breaking answer fails a real BFSI interview. Employers care about this more than polish.
Push-back intensity: gentle / realistic / toughYesBurnt-out switchers don't want more shouting; field freshers need the pressure. Personas asked for both.
Feedback: 3 strengths, 3 fixes, a better answer, 3-step planYesTests H2. Personas asked to see a better answer, not just a mark ("don't say toxic, say this instead").
Type or speak, 10-minute sessionsYesPeople practise at 11 p.m. in shared rooms, or after a 10-hour shift.
Benchmark score + share cardYesThe reason to come back, and the main growth loop.
English + HindiYesTests H4 properly with field-role users.
~50 questions per roleYesEnough for 10+ mocks without repeats; small enough to review by hand.
UPI paymentsYesTests willingness to pay from day one.
Mock built from a pasted job descriptionNextCheap to add; switchers asked for it.
Credit case mode (statement + slips, timed, then marked)NextCredit candidates fail on case files, not questions.
Role-fit check for switchersNextA free hook: "which jobs can I get with 2 years in collections?"
Employer view (audio clip + red-line result)NoMonth 6+, once there's a pool worth showing.
More languages, video / body-language analysisNoExpensive, and not needed to prove the core idea.

7Landing page, prototype and promo posts

Clickable prototype

Pick a role and a language, then answer out loud (speech-to-text) or type. After every answer the interviewer pushes back, e.g. a job-loss customer who then threatens to complain to RBI, or a DSA offering files for a cash cut. You get a score, a red-line check against RBI recovery rules and fair selling, a ranking band, strengths, fixes and a 3-step plan. Collections and Sales work in Hindi too. Scoring is keyword-based, as a stand-in for the LLM. Try a wrong answer on purpose, like "OK sir, I'll call at 7:30".

Title: Interviewed for collections / field sales roles at NBFCs? What did they actually ask you? I'm building a small practice tool for entry-level BFSI interviews (collections, field sales, credit and data analyst). Before building more, I want to get the questions right. If you've sat one of these in the last year: 1. What was the one question or role-play that threw you? 2. Were you told why you didn't get it? 3. Has anyone ever asked you to pay money to get the job? There's a free prototype if you want to try it, but I'm more interested in your stories. No sign-up, and I'm not selling anything yet.

Feedback I'd value, Sir

  1. Beachhead: is starting with field roles (collections / sales) right, or would analyst roles be an easier first market to reach through colleges?
  2. Pricing: the survey said "monthly unlimited", but the persona interviews said "₹99 once, or let my college pay". Should I lead with selling seats to colleges and institutes?
  3. Employer fee: is 20% of first-month salary, paid only after the hire stays 30 days, credible to an NBFC regional HR head?
  4. North Star: is "mock interviews completed per week" the right L0, or should it be closer to outcomes (offers)?
  5. Evidence: with a small survey, what would make the validation section convincing to you?
